WE HAVE A GAME CHANGER
A DECADE OF DAILY MAVERICK
WATCH: In this two-minute trailer, Daily Maverick’s hard-boiled sleuths recall the story behind the stories.
Marikana, Nkandla, Pistorius, NeneGate, Madiba, Mangaung, the rise of the EFF, the fall of SARS, ten years of Zuma and, of course, #GuptaLeaks: Daily Maverick covered it all with this digital publisher’s signature smarts and wit.
A chapter dedicated to each year in the Daily Maverick journey starts with the editorial team regrouping from the wreckage of Maverick Magazine in 2009. Next, the story charts the unlikely meeting of the co-founders; and how an unorthodox management structure somehow sustains challenges hurled by politics and disruptors from another realm. We also learn how a double-cross and car crash almost scuttle the most important news investigation in South Africa’s history.
This is THE story behind those stories — the biggest moments in South Africa over the past decade or so, recording the first version of history and being a startup during political upheaval. Compiled from frank interviews with co-founders and staff, past and present.
If a documentary and a reality TV show made a book baby, We Have a Game Changer would be it. By Fran Beighton, Tiara Walters and Tudor Caradoc-Davies. Published by MAVERICK 451.

OTHER WRITING, EDITING & PROOFREADING PROJECTS
2005 to present
From the political to the picaresque (not to suggest there’s a difference), I have written, edited and proofread leading commercial fiction and non-fiction titles for top African and international imprints – such as Tafelberg, Human & Rousseau and Bloomsbury – for more than 15 years.
In addition, two of my editing projects recently won top prizes in the international Gourmand 2020 ‘Best in the World’ Awards. Duinhuis by Isabella Niehaus (Human & Rousseau) won the Entertainment category. Food Stories – With Love from the Twins by Tebo and Lebo Ndala (NB Publishers) came third in the African category.
